WHAT IS NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE?
Naturopathy, or Naturopathic Medicine, is a distinct, integrated system of primary health care offered by licensed physicians after an average of 8 years of post-secondary education (4 years of university and 4 years of naturopathic medicine college). Once certified they are experts in using natural therapeutics such as: diet and nutritional supplements, herbs, acupuncture, homeopathy, counseling, exercise and other natural therapeutics (see explanation of each therapy below with videos found on youtube)
Doctors of Naturopathic Medicine do not just treat the symptom. Part of the naturopathic philosophy is to find the underlying cause of the health problem. Once the source of the problem has been identified then the process of improved health can begin. Also, Naturopathic doctors pay special emphasis on prevention of any illnesses that may appear in the future, especially if there is a strong family history evidence of certain conditions for a patient.
PRINCIPLES OF NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE:
RESPECT THE HEALING POWER OF NATURE.
The body has the inherent ability to establish, maintain, and restore health. The naturopathic physician's role is to facilitate the healing process, to identify and remove obstacles to health and recovery, and to support the creation of a healthy internal and external environment.
IDENTIFY AND TREAT THE CAUSE OF ILLNESS.
The true cause of illness will be discovered by a naturopathic doctor and removed or treated before a person can recover completely from any illness. True healing comes not from suppression of symptoms but by addressing underlying causes on all levels including physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual.
FIRST DO NO HARM BY USING NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE.
Naturopathic doctors choose safe and effective methods of treatments to work with the patient's vital force, respecting the intelligence of the natural healing process.
TREAT THE WHOLE PERSON USING NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE.
Naturopathic Medicine is a distinctively natural approach to health and healing that recognizes the integrity of the whole person.
NATUROPATHIC PHYSICIAN AS TEACHER.
The naturopathic physician's major role is to educate and encourage the patient to take responsibility for health. The physician is a catalyst for healthful change, empowering and motivating the patient to assume responsibility. It is the patient, not the doctor, who ultimately accomplishes healing.
PREVENTION USING NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE.
The ultimate goal of naturopathic treatment is prevention. This is accomplished through education and promotion of life-habits that create good health.
HOMEOPATHIC MEDICINE
Homeopathy is more than two-hundred-year-old medical system that is used all over the world with dramatic results as an effective alternative to drugs, especially when the drugs or even herbs cannot be prescribed to: pregnant and nursing women, infants and children. Homeopathy is based on the principle that our body possesses the innate wisdom to cure itself from disease. It works on a subtle yet powerful electromagnetic level, gently acting to strengthen the body's healing and immune response. It is applicable to treat acute and chronic conditions. Naturopathic doctors are trained in the classical constitutional prescribing, as well as more current and radical ways of remedy applications.
HERBAL MEDICINE.
Botanical or herbal medicine is an important branch of naturopathy, which uses various types of plants as medicinal agents in the treatment of disease. This form of treatment takes advantage of the integrity of a whole plant as opposed to the isolated components used in allopathic pharmaceuticals that usually have side effects. Many plant substances are very powerful medicines and should not be self-prescribed.
TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE. ACUPUNCTURE, HERBS
Naturopathic doctors are trained in theories of Traditional Chinese medicine and how it can be adapted to Western clinical conditions. Acupuncture, which is a use of energetic action of over 200 points in the body, and herbal wisdom accumulated over 5,000 years of practical applications by Chinese healers, provides the methods of treatment, which can unify and harmonize the imbalances present in disease conditions.
BACH FLOWER REMEDIES.
Bach flower remedies are a group of energetic essences derived from various flowers by the British physician and homeopath Edward Bach in the early 20th century. They are somewhat similar in nature to homeopathic remedies, but they are not created by potentization and are prescribed exclusively on the basis of a particular characteristic or emotional state.
CLINICAL NUTRITION, SUPPLEMENTS and DIETARY MODIFICATIOINS
Healing with whole foods is the cornerstone of naturopathy. Foods and nutritional supplements are used as the best medicine to treat a number of medical conditions both safely and effectively with fewer complications and side effects. Naturopaths can fine-tune your current eating habits so that your diet is more nutritious.
HYDROTHERAPY
Hydrotherapy is the use of water in the treatment of disease. There are now many dozens of methods of applying hydrotherapy, including baths, saunas, douches, wraps, and packs.
COUNSELING
Counseling, nutritional balancing, stress management, and other therapies are used to help patients heal on the psychological level.
