WHAT IS NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE?
Naturopathy, or Naturopathic Medicine, is a distinct, integrated system of primary health care offered by licensed physicians after an average of 8 years of post-secondary education (4 years of university and 4 years of naturopathic medicine college). Once certified they are experts in using natural therapeutics: nutrition, homeopathy, chinese medicine, acupuncture, herbs and many more.
PRINCIPLES OF NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE:
RESPECT THE HEALING POWER OF NATURE.
The body has the inherent ability to establish, maintain, and restore health. The naturopathic physician's role is to facilitate the healing process, to identify and remove obstacles to health and recovery, and to support the creation of a healthy internal and external environment.
IDENTIFY AND TREAT THE CAUSE OF ILLNESS.
The true cause of illness will be discovered by a naturopathic doctor and removed or treated before a person can recover completely from any illness. True healing comes not from suppression of symptoms but by addressing underlying causes on all levels including physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual.
FIRST DO NO HARM BY USING NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE.
Naturopathic doctors choose safe and effective methods of treatments to work with the patient's vital force, respecting the intelligence of the natural healing process.
TREAT THE WHOLE PERSON USING NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE.
Naturopathic Medicine is a distinctively natural approach to health and healing that recognizes the integrity of the whole person.
NATUROPATHIC PHYSICIAN AS TEACHER.
The naturopathic physician's major role is to educate and encourage the patient to take responsibility for health. The physician is a catalyst for healthful change, empowering and motivating the patient to assume responsibility. It is the patient, not the doctor, who ultimately accomplishes healing.
PREVENTION USING NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE.
The ultimate goal of naturopathic treatment is prevention. This is accomplished through education and promotion of life-habits that create good health.
